The crime film "Spring Breakers" ("Spring Break") from director Harmony Korine is preparing to return with a new screen project after approximately 14 years. Bella Thorne, who was previously announced as part of the project’s cast, has officially revealed that she wrote the film’s screenplay and will also direct it.
Director Harmony Korine, known for films such as "Gummo" and "Trash Humpers", has caused major discussions in the film world in recent years with projects including "Aggro Dr1ft", filmed entirely with thermal cameras, and "Baby Invasion", which replaces criminals’ faces with baby faces using artificial intelligence.
Korine’s "Spring Breakers" follows a group of college students on spring break who unexpectedly find themselves at the center of a dangerous criminal underworld.
The original film grossed $31.7 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing screen project of Harmony Korine’s career.
Former Disney stars Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens played the most mature and daring roles of their careers in the film. The cast also included Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine, and James Franco.
The drug dealer nicknamed "Alien", played by James Franco, who draws the young women into the dangerous criminal world, became one of the film’s most memorable characters.
Bringing Disney stars together with Korine’s controversial cinematic language, the film gained cult status over time thanks to its neon aesthetic and distinctive perspective on pop culture. Dividing audiences into two camps when it was released, the project managed to leave a lasting impression on film fans.
Although the first film’s storyline did not directly call for a sequel, a new "Spring Breakers" project was first announced in 2025. According to the initial plans, the project was being developed with an entirely different cast and creative team from the original film.
Bella Thorne, who was recruited for the cast as an actress, revealed in an interview on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast that she had completely changed the project’s direction. Thorne emphasized that producers who watched an early cut of her recently completed film "Color Your Hurt" asked her to write the screenplay for the new film. Saying that producers were delighted with the screenplay she submitted, Thorne confirmed that she will both write and direct "Spring Breakers 2".

It had previously been announced that Grace Van Dien, Ariel Martin, and True Whitaker would also appear alongside Thorne. However, following the project’s new creative direction, it is currently unknown whether these names will remain in the cast.
The film’s theatrical release date has not yet been officially announced.
