One of horror cinema’s most iconic franchises, "A Nightmare on Elm Street", is preparing to return to audiences with a new film. The world-famous film studio Paramount Pictures has reached an official agreement to acquire the US distribution rights to director Wes Craven’s cult screenplay.
According to information published by "The Hollywood Reporter", Paramount Pictures has fully purchased the franchise’s US rights. The new film will be produced under the studio’s "Paramount Primal" brand, which focuses specifically on the horror and thriller genres.
According to sources, the US copyrights were licensed from the Craven family, which protects and manages Wes Craven’s legacy. The director’s wife, Iya Labunka, and son, Jonathan Craven, were directly involved in signing the agreement.
Iya Labunka and Jonathan Craven will also serve as the new film’s main producers. They will be joined by attorney and producer Marc Toberoff, known for his successful work in copyright law. J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules will serve as executive producers on behalf of "Paramount Primal".

In a statement to the press, Iya Labunka said they were delighted to bring the unique and terrifying world created by Wes Craven to a new generation of fans. Emphasizing that horror cinema is increasingly securing the position it deserves in modern culture, Iya Labunka said they were eagerly awaiting the day the new production would meet audiences in dark movie theaters.
The studio’s producers, J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, also noted that they were huge fans of Wes Craven’s work and said they would take great pride in the responsibility of bringing a new story to this legendary universe.
The "A Nightmare on Elm Street" series was part of "New Line Cinema" and "Warner Bros." for many years. However, following legal battles, the Craven family managed to reclaim the US rights to the original screenplay.
"New Line Cinema" currently continues to hold the film’s international distribution rights. The new agreement with "Paramount" covers only the United States. This means the new film’s global distribution and theatrical release processes will be handled by different companies depending on the region.
According to official statements, the new production will remain faithful to the franchise’s roots and take place in the same universe based on the original screenplay. However, no extensive information has yet been provided about the film’s plot, cast, director, or who will specifically portray Freddy Krueger.
One of the biggest questions among the series’ devoted fans is whether legendary actor Robert Englund, synonymous with the character of Freddy Krueger, will return to the project. At this stage, it remains unclear whether the 79-year-old actor will appear in the film.
It is worth recalling that previously, names such as world-famous actor Jim Carrey were mentioned among the candidates for the role of Freddy. The search for new and different ideas for the project had in fact been continuing behind closed doors since 2019.
