The "Dune" series, which has made a major impact on world cinema and grossed a total of $1.1 billion with its first two films, is coming to an end. The first clip from the third film, considered the finale of director Denis Villeneuve’s ambitious project, has already been presented to audiences.
The clip opens with Paul Atreides meeting the Fremen warrior Chani. As you may recall, at the end of the second film, Chani left Paul and headed into the desert. Their conversation in the new film offers important clues about the characters’ future.
In the film based on Frank Herbert’s novel "Dune Messiah," Paul’s sister Alia is shown clearly for the first time. Played by renowned actress Anya Taylor-Joy, Alia is presented as an unusual figure referred to as the "Abomination" by the Bene Gesserit.
The clip’s biggest surprise is the return of Duncan Idaho, who died in the first film. In addition, the new threat facing Paul, the shape-shifting assassin Skytale, also draws attention. The character is played by star actor Robert Pattinson.
According to the information released, "Dune 3" will cover events taking place 17 years after Paul Atreides seizes the imperial throne.
Denis Villeneuve describes the film as being closer to the thriller genre than the previous two installments. The director has stated that while the first two films covered the series’ first book, the third film will be completely different in both tone and narrative structure.
"Dune 3" was filmed largely in 65 mm format, although digital and IMAX cameras were used for some scenes. This is a first in Villeneuve’s career. The film will showcase Arrakis’s different geographical regions and climates, while its music will once again be composed by legendary composer Hans Zimmer.
