Netflix’s new Brazilian thriller series "Radioactive Emergency" (original title: Emergência Radioativa) has risen to the top of the global viewing charts after its first day on the platform.
Inspired by the nuclear disaster that occurred in Brazil just one year after the 1986 Chernobyl accident, the series quickly rose to number one on Netflix’s non-English-language series chart. According to the official Top 10 data, the series attracted 7 million views during the week of March 17–23, making it the platform’s most-watched non-English-language series worldwide. The series also ranked near the top of daily charts in many countries, particularly Brazil.
The Goiânia disaster lies at the center of the events
Radioactive Emergency follows physicists and doctors as they race against time to contain a major radiological disaster and save the lives of thousands of people.
According to the synopsis published on the platform’s Tudum, the story is inspired by real events that took place in the Brazilian city of Goiânia in 1987. After a minor theft attempt leads to a horrific chain of events, radioactive material rapidly spreads among the city’s residents, while first responders, doctors, and nuclear physicists try to contain the growing crisis.
A strong debut creates a stir
The 2026 series consists of five episodes in total. Its cast includes names such as Johnny Massaro, Paulo Gorgulho, and Ana Costa. The series was created by Gustavo Lipsztein, known for the project 1 Contra Todos.
Data from ratings-tracking platform FlixPatrol shows that, as of April 6, the series remains in Netflix’s global television top ten. In Brazil, the series has climbed to the number-one spot.
It brings contemporary issues to the screen through a historical event
Although Radioactive Emergency is about a disaster that took place in the 1980s, its focus on weak oversight and the consequences of environmental crises also touches on pressing contemporary debates. Alongside the technical aspects of the radiological disaster, the series reflects its individual and social effects.
