"Santa Monica Studio" broke its silence of nearly four years with a project that even the game’s fans could never have predicted. The upcoming new game will not be about Kratos, but about the story of his wife Faye, whose life has remained hidden for years.
Although an official release date has not yet been announced, the lengthy presentation video showed that the project has already reached a significant stage of development.
From the very first minutes of "God of War" (2018), we saw that Faye’s death was the main force driving the entire story forward. The new game takes us behind the scenes of that very moment. After her death, Faye finds herself in a strange afterlife filled with bizarre creatures. However, she knows about the fate of Kratos and Atreus, who remain in the real world. To prevent the great dangers awaiting them, Faye will have to make extremely difficult decisions.
On this mystical journey, Faye is accompanied by a mysterious talking cosmic cube and a guardian named Rue. Faye’s combat skills, demonstrated from the very beginning as she comes under attack, show that the series’ familiar brutal, aggressive, close-quarters spirit has been preserved in full force.
"Santa Monica Studio" developers have worked on an entirely new mechanic to distinguish Faye’s gameplay from Kratos’s familiar heavy, destructive, bone-crushing style. This time, we will see a more agile and dynamic Goddess of War:
- Seamless transitions between air and ground: During combat, Faye can perform rapid combinations (combos) between the ground and air through acrobatic movements.
- Maximum agility: Reaction time has been significantly accelerated compared with the series’ previous games. This makes encounters more chaotic and faster-paced.
- A synthesis of mythologies: One of the most interesting aspects is that the game is not limited to a Scandinavian setting; it presents a more experimental world by combining different mythological elements within the same universe. "God of War: Laufey" is not merely a new game, but also an answer to some theories that have been discussed on gaming forums for years.
Fans probably remember who blew that famous horn behind the scenes in the 2018 game to summon Jörmungandr, the giant serpent that foretold the end of the world. The strongest claims suggested that this mysterious person was Faye herself. The new presentation video has reignited this theory by showing that she has a different connection to the concepts of death and time. It seems that even after her death, Faye continued helping her family from behind the scenes.
Cory Barlog’s clue from years ago: In an interview given in 2020, the series’ director Cory Barlog noted that Faye’s role in this universe was greater than anyone realized and that he definitely wanted to tell a story one day about how Kratos and Faye met. It appears that Barlog was waiting for the right time to bring his plan to life.
A completely new era begins for "God of War."
The franchise, which began with Greek mythology in 2005, moved to Scandinavia in 2018, and largely completed Kratos and Atreus’s story with "Ragnarok" in 2022, is now opening an entirely new chapter.
"God of War: Laufey" takes a risky yet equally courageous step by placing a character we know very little about at the center of the story. If the clues are not misleading us, this game will provide an official answer to the series’ darkest secrets and introduce us to the true hero who has remained in Kratos’s shadow.
