Terminology in the gaming world can sometimes be confusing. Especially when we are talking about content added to games later, we have all heard the terms "DLC" and "Expansion Pack."
But what do they actually mean, and what is the difference between them?
What Is DLC?
DLC is an abbreviation of the English term "Downloadable Content." It refers to additional digital content released by developers after a game launches, which players can download over the internet.
DLC can come in many different forms:
- Cosmetic items: Character outfits (skins), weapon colors, and more.
- New items: New weapons or vehicles added to the game.
- Small story quests: Short missions added to the main story. DLCs are usually smaller files, and their prices vary depending on the size of the content. They can sometimes be free as well.
What Is an Expansion Pack?
The term expansion pack dates back further, to the era when games were sold on CDs and DVDs. These packs add a large amount of new content to an existing game.
An expansion pack may include the following:
- Completely new story scenarios.
- New regions or maps added to the game.
- New gameplay mechanics, character classes, or races.
- Content that significantly extends the length of the game. For example, "Blood and Wine" released for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and every new pack released for World of Warcraft are considered "Expansion Packs."
Differences Between DLC and Expansion Packs
Although both terms refer to additional content added to a game, the main differences are:
- Size and Scope: DLCs are usually smaller additions, such as a few outfits or a single mission. Expansion packs are large updates that fundamentally expand the game and offer hours of additional gameplay.
- Price: Since they are smaller in scope, DLCs are generally cheaper. Expansion packs, on the other hand, may be sold at or near the price of a new game.
- Impact: DLC adds cosmetic changes or small touches to a game. An expansion pack extends the game's lifespan and significantly changes the experience. In conclusion, every Expansion Pack is technically DLC, since it can be downloaded, but not every DLC is an Expansion Pack.
